GRIT is a top-down competitive shooter game where players must harvest resources to craft weapons to frag other players. There are two available game modes, which are "Castaway" and "Goldrush". In Castaway, the player's goal is to get the most frags by the end of the round, while in Goldrush the player's goal is to have the most gold harvested by the end of the round, fending off other players to do so.

The entire map is destructible, being comprised of trees, stone, and ore that can be harvested for materials. The ores are randomly placed in the stone each time you play, which makes it so that despite there being just one map, each round will still be a bit different each time.

Players are able to use the materials they harvest to craft pickaxes, which they can use to harvest better materials. But most importantly, materials can be used to craft weapons and ammo to defeat enemy players. Harvesting better materials to make better guns is vital for success.
